Lynda Champion McKenzie

Lynda Champion McKenzie, born September 5, 1948, passed away April 24, 2026, surrounded by her children, at Phoebe Sumter hospital in Americus, GA.

Mrs. McKenzie was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Champion, Sr. and Lillian Flint Champion of Aberdeen, MD. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Maryland.

She was joined in Blessed Union to her husband, the late Hal Corbett McKenzie, on February 8, 1975. Together they raised five children and remained devoted to each other and their family until his death in 2010.

Over the years, Mrs. McKenzie spent thirty years as an educator, both in the public school system both in Georgia and Maryland, and for the Department of Corrections in Oglethorpe, as well as a librarian at the Montezuma Public Library in Montezuma, Ga. She earned a much deserved retirement in 2014 from Burdell Hunt Elementary School in Macon, Ga.

Mrs. McKenzie enjoyed spending her time reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching TV crime dramas, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered by her loved ones as being brave, principled, determined, empathetic, outgoing, and compassionate, with a laugh that was hard to forget.

She was also an active member of Atlanta Family Church in Ellenwood, GA.

Mrs. McKenzie was preceded in death by her husband, Hal, her brother, Benjamin Champion, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV, and her parents.

She is survived by her five children, and eight grandchildren: Haley McKenzie, and her children Alex, Wyatt, and Elayna Legg of Oglethorpe; McKelin McKenzie and his partner Laura and their children Adia McGahee and Owen McKenzie of Macon; Lynzie Mims and her husband Matthew and their son Jeffery of Americus; Meghan McKenzie of Oglethorpe; and Alesia McKenzie-Smith and her husband Joshua and children Finnigan and Milo Smith of Warner Robins, as well as a sister Kathleen Mohn, of Las Vegas, NV.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Atlanta Family Church 3060 Bouldcrest Rd Ellenwood, GA.
