Mr. Thomas Boyd Jackson

Thomas Boyd Jackson, age 75, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. The family will greet friends Friday, July 12th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Aldridge Funeral & Cremation Services in Americus GA. Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the Smithville City Cemetery. Rev. Damon Fountain will officiate the service. Mr. Jackson was born July 1, 1949, in Plains GA. He attended Smithville Academy and was a graduate of Plains High School. He grew up in the Lee/Sumter County area. He later spent time with relatives in the Lithonia/Stone Mountain area where he worked at a salvage yard. During his time in North Ga, he met the love of his life, Mary Nell Jones. They were married on June 12th, 1969. Due to the lack of fishing possibilities, he packed up his new wife and horse and returned to the area he grew up in. They started their family in a single-wide trailer he turned into a spacious home on Boulevard Ave. in Smithville, Ga. Mr. Jackson began Jackson Roofing and after several years of hard work in the construction/roofing business, he was offered a position with the USPS as a substitute rural mail carrier. He was eventually promoted to a full-time rural mail carrier. He retired from the USPS after 29 years and 6 months. Once the children were grown and grandchildren came along, Mr. Jackson built a bigger home off of Hwy 118 with a generator, wood from torn-down houses, and help from family members. Once the grandchildren grew up and he retired from the USPS, he and Mary moved to Lake Blackshear where he was a beloved member of his community for 11+ years until his untimely death only 6 days after his 75th birthday. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather. Mr. Jackson never met a stranger. He loved to joke and help others in any way possible. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and a good poker game with his friends. Among other accomplishments, he was a volunteer fireman, a member of the CERT team, and restarted the Chicken Pie Festival in Smithville, GA. Mr. Jackson was an accomplished fisherman and marksman, having won numerous tournaments and competitions. He also loved to participate in rodeo competitions. Mr. Jackson was one of a kind, a man of his word, an awesome dad and "P", and a loving husband. He will be deeply, deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Nell Jones Jackson of Cobb; daughters, Saron M. Jackson (Parker Mims) of Cobb, Stacey A. Hamil (Brian) of Glen St. Mary, FL, and son Thomas E. Jackson (Rachel) of Smithville, GA. Mr. Jackson is also survived by two sisters, Sandra Jackson Avera of Edison, GA, and Vickie L. Gillis (Larry) of Leesburg; brothers Kenneth D. Jackson (Judy) of Athens, GA., Richard Hewitt (Samantha) of Athens; a sister-in-law, Darlene Jackson and nine grandchildren, Zachery T. Gillett, Haley A. Gillett, Peyton B. Gillett, Dylan A. Gillett, Thomas W. Jackson, Garrett J. Jackson, Mason W. Jackson, Rosa G. Enzor and Evelyn W. Enzor. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Jackson, and a brother-in-law Henry Avera.
