Claude Leonard Walters

Mr. Claude Leonard Walters, III age 82 of Plains passed Monday, May 31, 2021 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at the Plains United Methodist Church. Rev. R. T. Beverly will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 1st from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Aldridge Funeral Services. Friends are welcome to visit the family residence at 308 Church Street Plains. Claude Leonard Walters, III was born December 27, 1938 in Plains, Ga. He was the son of the late Claude Leonard Walters Jr. and the late Beth Murray Walters. Mr. Walters started school at Plains School in 1944 and graduated in 1957. After graduating high school, he joined the Army reserves in 1957 and went active duty for a period of time. He served in the reserves until 1961. He started college at Georgia Southwestern and transferred to Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Management. After college he married the love of his life Sandra Harrell and started a family. He went to work for Southeastern Underwriter as a Fire Protection Engineer and lived in Savannah, Ga, Jacksonville, Fl and Montgomery Al. He and his family decided to move back to Plains, GA and buy the family grocery store. Mr. Walters also was a substitute rural mail carrier and was appointed in charge of the Plains Post Office for a period of time. He also operated Walters Tax Service for many years. He was a member of Plains United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board as Chairman and held many other positions in the church. He served six years on the Board at Southland Academy, was a Plains City Councilman, was Chief of the Plains Fire Department, served on the Sam Shortline Authority Board and was a member of the Plains Lions Club. Mr. Walters was one of six men recognized by the Plains Historic Club as a living legend in Plains. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sandra Walters of Plains. Two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Walters Young (Walt) of Plains and Carol Walters Kennon (Kyle) of Americus. A son Craig Harrell Walters (Chip) of Buckhead. Granddaughters Lauretta Young Welch (Frank) of Jackson, WY and Kate Kennon of Statesboro, GA and Grandsons Charlie Young (Kati) of Plains and Jake Kennon of Americus. One great granddaughter Layla Young of Plains also survives. One brother and sister-in-law Murray Walters (Claudia) of Jefferson, GA and one sister and brother-in-law Claudette Walters Strickland (John) of Akin, SC and two sisters-in-law Lutrelle Perry of Americus and Marcine Head of Atlanta, GA. Mr. Walters was preceded in death by a grandson Leroy Young.
